Creation Days 1
Through 6
Introduction
Genesis 1:1–31 reveals God’s ordered work across six days, preparing
an inhabited world and crowning it with mankind made in His image.
The Word That
Creates and Orders
“Then God said” opens each work of creation. By His word the heavens
and the earth are framed, and by His wisdom the creation is arranged
with purpose (Genesis 1:3; Psalm 33:6, 9; Hebrews 11:3). The text
presents a world that is intelligible, good, and suitable for life,
displaying His eternal power and divine nature so that every
generation may seek and honor Him (Romans 1:20).
Day One:
Light and Darkness
God speaks light into the darkness, names the light “Day” and the
darkness “Night,” and establishes the daily rhythm of evening and
morning, the first day (Genesis 1:3–5). Divine naming shows rule and
care. The cycle of day and night sustains life and marks time for
worship and work.
Day Two: The
Expanse Above
God makes the expanse and separates waters below from waters above,
giving the world its sky and atmosphere (Genesis 1:6–8). This
separation is an act of hospitality, shaping a home where breath and
weather patterns support living creatures and future image-bearers.
Day Three:
Land Revealed and Vegetation Given
God gathers the waters so dry land appears, names the land “Earth”
and the gathered waters “Seas,” and then calls forth vegetation:
grasses, seed-bearing herbs, and fruit trees, each “according to its
kind” (Genesis 1:9–13). The earth is clothed with provision. Seed,
fruit, and kind underscore God’s design for continuity, order, and
abundance.
Day Four:
Lights for Signs and Seasons
God appoints the great lights and the stars to mark days, years, and
seasons and to give light on the earth (Genesis 1:14–19).
Timekeeping is His gift. The heavens declare His glory and guide
human stewardship and worship with regularity and beauty (Psalm
19:1–6).
Day Five:
Waters and Skies Filled with Life
The seas teem and the skies swarm with living creatures. God blesses
them to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:20–23). Diversity and
order appear together as each creature thrives within its God-given
kind.
Day Six
(Part 1): Land Animals
God brings forth livestock, creeping things, and beasts of the
earth, each within its kind (Genesis 1:24–25). The land is now alive
and ready for its steward.
Day Six
(Part 2): Humanity in God’s Image
“Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness” (Genesis
1:26–28). Humanity reflects God in spiritual and moral capacities:
reasoning, worship, love, creativity, and relationship (John 4:24;
Zechariah 12:1; Hebrews 12:9). God creates humanity male and female
and entrusts them with dominion over fish, birds, and every living
thing. Psalm 8 celebrates this honor and responsibility: crowned
with glory and honor, humanity governs God’s works as a faithful
steward (Psalm 8:5–8).
Provision,
Stewardship, and Reverence for Life
God appoints vegetation for food to man and to the animals (Genesis
1:29–30). After the flood, He permits animal food with a clear
reverence for life (Genesis 9:3–4). Every table becomes a place for
thanksgiving and sanctification by the word and prayer (1 Timothy
4:4–5). Stewardship calls for gratitude, restraint, and care for
creation as God’s entrusted property.
Very Good
and Oriented to Christ
God surveys His completed work and declares it “very good” (Genesis
1:31). The New Testament reveals the center and goal of creation:
the Son through whom all things were made and in whom all things
hold together, who reconciles by the blood of His cross (John 1:1–3;
Colossians 1:15–20). The Maker is the Redeemer, and His finished
work in creation points to His finished work in salvation and the
new man created according to God in righteousness and holiness
(Ephesians 4:24).
