What Jesus Brought To Man

Introduction (1 John 1:1–4)
Our text proclaims what the apostles heard, saw, carefully observed, and handled concerning “the Word of life.” In these opening lines John shows what Jesus brought to mankind: God’s presence, eternal life, holy fellowship, and overflowing joy (1 John 1:1–4).

Jesus Brought God to Man
John begins with eternity: “That which was from the beginning” (1 John 1:1). He writes against teachers who denied the true humanity and full deity of Christ. Scripture presents Jesus as eternal and divine: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1–3). The Word became flesh and “dwelt among us,” revealing the Father’s glory in grace and truth (John 1:14). In Him “dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9). God “has spoken to us by His Son” in these last days (Hebrews 1:1–2), and that Son says, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). The apostles heard His voice, saw His works with their own eyes, studied His life up close, and even handled His risen body (1 John 1:1; John 20:27–28). Jesus came as Immanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). Through Him, God stepped into time, took on true humanity, and revealed the Father’s will with perfect clarity.

Jesus Brought Eternal Life
“The life was manifested… and we declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us” (1 John 1:2). To receive the Son is to receive life, because eternal life is in Him (1 John 5:11–12). He came that we may have life to the full (John 10:10). His sinless obedience under relentless testing makes Him a faithful High Priest who understands and helps (Hebrews 4:15). The empty tomb confirms the promise: our hope in Christ reaches beyond this life (1 Corinthians 15:19–20). The apostles testify as eyewitnesses so that all may believe and live (John 20:31).

Jesus Brought Fellowship
“What we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:3). Fellowship rests on shared truth and a shared walk. “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). God binds His people together in the gospel and calls them to walk “in the light” so that they enjoy continual cleansing and genuine fellowship (1 John 1:7). This fellowship reflects the unity Jesus prayed for—His people one, even as He and the Father are one (John 17:20–23). In this family, honor one another with brotherly love and tender hearts (Romans 12:10; Ephesians 4:32), for the church is a household where truth and love thrive together (Acts 2:42; 1 Peter 2:17).

Jesus Brought Joy
“These things we write to you that your joy may be full” (1 John 1:4). The gospel fills the heart to the brim. The Lord gives His people a joy that abides in every season (John 15:11; Philippians 4:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:16). God poured out love at the cross when we were without strength, ungodly, sinners, and enemies; this grace births a resilient joy (Romans 5:6–10). Believers rejoice “with joy inexpressible and full of glory,” because Christ is risen and our inheritance is secure (1 Peter 1:3–9). This joy strengthens daily faithfulness and stretches into eternity.
