Jesus at the Well Listen and Learn (John 4:1-42)
Introduction:
1. Alan Webster once wrote a tract on the account
of the woman at the well as it relates to evangelism, and I want to take
this morning and this evening and take a look at this text with you.
2. We are concentrating on having a greater outward
focus, and who better to show us how than Jesus, himself.
3. Jesus illustrates numerous principles in his
encounter with the woman at the well that will aid us in talking to our
neighbors about Jesus.
4. Consider and implement these points.
I. Jesus Did Not Let Culture Close Doors
A. (John 4:4) He needed
to go through Samaria.
B. Did not keep aloof.
Did not teach isolation – John 17:15
C. Will we eliminate all
prospects who don’t look like, and act like us?
D. Jesus was a friend of
publicans and sinners
II. Jesus Overcame Fatigue to Evangelize
A. (John 4:6).
B. What do you do and how
do you act when you’re tired?
C. Jesus had time for
people, even when tired.
D. (Acts 24:25) Felix.
E. Work now, rest later.
III. Jesus Didn’t Start With, “Do You Want a
Bible Study”
A. (John 4:7).
B. He engaged her on a
personal level and asked a favor of her.
C. Studies are born out
of friendships, not cold invitations. Rarely do these work anymore.
IV. Jesus Waited for Privacy
A. (John 4:8). Arguing in
a group usually makes things worse.
B. People don’t want to
be embarrassed and salvation is personal.
C. (Acts 18:26).
Privately
V. Jesus Was Not Easily Offended
A. (John 4:9-15).
B. (Proverbs 15:1). Soft
answer
C. Humility and kindness
almost always wins the day.
D. (Acts 17:22) Though he
was stirred, Paul started with kindness. Athens, Aureopagus
E. Jesus aroused her
interest and offered her something relevant, eternal life.
VI. Jesus Didn’t Ignore Sin
A. (John 4:16-18).
Confront the individual. They have the responsibility to decide for or
against Christ.
B. Salvation involves
repentance.
C. I can come to Jesus,
just as I am, but I can’t walk with Jesus just as I am. I must change.
Luke 3:8; 10-14
VII. Jesus Emphasized Sincerity and Truth
A. (John 4:24).
B. Stressing the heart
and Scripture will resonate with people and make a distinction between
true religion and false religion. Psalm 51:6
VIII. Jesus Identified Himself as the Savior
A. (John 4:25-26).
B. We are not calling
people to us but to Jesus.
C. Jesus must be the
central focus of our study.
IX. Jesus Used One Contact to Reach Others
A. (John 4:28-30).
B. This is the way it is
supposed to work.
C. (2 Timothy 2:2).
God’s Plan
X. Jesus Put the Spiritual Above the Physical
A. (John 4:31-34).
B. Do spiritual matters
come before physical matters in our homes? 1 Timothy 4:8
C. Do our children see
Mt. Moriah experiences in our homes (Genesis 22)? Abraham, Isaac
D. (2 Corinthians 6:2).
Now is the say of salvation
XI. Jesus Calls His Disciples to Open Their Eyes
to the Harvest
A. (John 4:35).
Prospects everywhere
B. We aren’t just the
recipients of God’s blessings, we are harvesters.
C. Ills. Little Red Hen.
Didn’t help the little red hen.
XII. Jesus Acknowledged Teamwork
A. (John 4:36).
B. We are a team, and we
work together in this task of saving souls.
C. (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).
All have a part to play.
Conclusion:
1. So, we’ve learned from
the best.
2. We have modeled before
us how Jesus saved an entire village, that started with just one.
3. Friends, let’s
surrender our excuses and conquer our fears.
4. The world needs the
good news of Jesus.
